Monumental is excited to launch FutureBUILDS NEXT, a free fellowship program for Toronto’s housing leaders of tomorrow. In 2025, FutureBUILDS NEXT will focus on enhancing the leadership skills and growing the talent pool of early-career Black professionals in the non-profit housing sector. Fellows bring a range of experiences as policy-makers, community organizers, real estate professionals, designers, front-line workers, tradespeople, entrepreneurs and individuals with lived experience in the community housing sector. These leaders are passionate about creating affordable housing solutions that serve the diverse needs of Black communities across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). 

 

Details

Running throughout June and July, this 2 month-intensive program will provide participants with:

Access to a network of like-minded peers, established leaders and professionals advancing innovative and impactful non-profit housing initiatives

A full day, immersive off-site retreat, where you’ll begin to build life-long connections

10 weeks of interactive, structured learning with guest speakers and panels discussions unpacking practices and strategies to get non-profit housing built (Thursday evenings from 6-8:30 pm)

An exciting travel-based learning trip within North America to learn from experts and leaders in the Black housing space (during the week of July 7th, 2025)*

*Costs for airfare, accommodation and meals will be covered by the FutureBUILDS NEXT fellowship.

Who Should Apply

Are you someone that…

Identifies as Black (required) and a newcomer (optional)

Is between the ages of 18 to 32

Has demonstrated leadership experience in Toronto’s diverse Black communities

Can show how a deeper understanding of the non-profit housing sector will benefit your career journey and work within Black communities

This fellowship is open applicants with a range of experiences, including those with:

  • Some knowledge about non-profit housing, social or community services, and/or real estate development; or

  • Lived experience living or working in community housing (Toronto Community Housing, co-operative housing, or other non-profit housing); or

  • You have a desire to become an entrepreneur that advances new non-profit housing initiatives and/or an interest in potential career pathways into the sector
